September Workshop: Sharron Armel - “Speaky & Pike in the 21st Century”

PLEASE NOTE:  This Workshop is held on a Saturday and is at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden!

 Inspired by this ordinary block, often found in 8-pointed stars, we’ll try several techniques that make it easier to do well, and a few arrangements of blocks in new quilt designs. 

In class, we’ll launch some Flying Things, and then consider other ways to use this block creatively. 

       

 Fabrics to make a 40”x48” quilt top 

	20 blocks with border	30 blocks, no border
Background	1 yard of 44” fabric	1½ yards of 44” fabric
Border and binding	1 yard	½ yard
*Prints: 4½” squares	20	30
*Prints: 5” squares in pairs	20 pairs	30 pairs

*EASY substitute for the prints:

1½ charm packs (Charm pack is 42 5” squares.)

2 charm packs plus 6 squares at 4½”

Cutting to do before class (if possible)

	20 blocks with border	30 blocks, no border
Background 4½” squares: Cut strips 4½”xWOF and recut into 4½” squares	20	30
Background 3”x6” rectangles: Cut strips 6”xWOF and recut into 3” widths	40	60
Prints: 4½” squares	20	30
Prints: 5” squares in pairs	20 pairs	30 pairs
Border: 4½”xWOF	5 strips	none

Tools & Notions

60° ruler        / Eleanor Burns’ “Triangle in a Square” template set is ideal,
4½”square ruler    \ but not the only way to make this work!
straight ruler at least 8” long
rotary cutter

Optional: If you have a small cutting mat, or a small rotating cutting mat, you can cut at your sewing station and save a few trips to the cutting table.

Extras of rulers and small mats will be available for you to borrow in class.
